Understanding Euka Lessons & Supporting Student Learning

How are Euka lessons structured? Can I adapt the lessons to suit my learner? Do I need to complete Matific/Mathspace activities?

Updated over a week ago

This article provides insight into how Euka lessons are designed to support both students and home-educating parents.

Our lessons incorporate a variety of teaching styles and strategies to keep learners engaged while helping parents discover their child’s learning preferences. Some activities involve open-ended problem-solving, encouraging students to think critically and explore concepts independently. For these, you can refer to the provided answer pages (For Grade 3 onwards) located in the Getting Started Resources tab to check their responses. Other lessons include explicit instructions with example problems to guide their understanding.

Each lesson may be structured differently or include a combination of question styles. For example:

  • Some lessons have an option for students to type their responses in digital answer fields.

  • Other questions may prompt an open discussion around the concept. Some families may then choose to keep a dated diary (for example) and record observations of learning as you have conversations with your student. The diary entries can be used at reporting time to showcase student improvement.

  • Certain lessons include hands-on activities, an example being an English lesson that involves playing a word game. These activities may require printed materials, such as spelling cards. Any necessary templates for these activities can be found in the Activity Sheets section within the Getting Started Resources tab.

It’s important to note that not every lesson includes activity sheets with practice questions. Some lessons introduce new topics and encourage exploration. In these cases, a great approach is to have a conversation with your student about what they already know and what they found interesting. You might even encourage them to create a summary page to reflect on their learning.

Additionally, digital activities from our third-party Maths programs are integrated within the lessons for extra practice:

These activities are valuable additional exercises, but are not compulsory.

Occasionally, a Mathspace/Matific activity linked to your lesson might appear unrelated or disconnected from the math lesson you just completed on the student portal. This happens because some Mathspace/Matific activities are designed to either review previous topics or introduce concepts that will be covered in future lessons.

You can of course, opt to complete these additional Mathspace/Matific lessons or skip over them.

Adapting Lessons to Suit Your Needs

At Euka, we aim to be flexible to accommodate each family’s and learner’s individual needs. Lessons can be adapted or skipped as necessary. For example:

  • Have a discussion instead of writing answers.

  • Use a PowerPoint presentation instead of completing a written activity.

  • Watch a video instead of participating in hands-on activities.

  • Use read-aloud software to listen to a lesson if your student is experiencing reading fatigue.

The Euka program is set up to enable you to use the content that is most relevant to your learner. Let them spend the time on topics they love and work with them to target gaps in their learning as they go.
