South Australia - Preparing for a Home Visit

What do I need to do in order to be ready for my Home Visit in South Australia/SA?

Updated today

A home visit from the Department of Education in South Australia (SA) is a standard part of maintaining your home education registration. It’s an opportunity to demonstrate how your chosen program supports your child’s learning and wellbeing. If you’re using the EUKA program, here’s how to get ready with confidence.

The Education Department wants to see that your child is receiving an education that is regular, comprehensive, and for the most part, aligned with the Australian Curriculum. The visit is usually a friendly and constructive check-in. It’s not an inspection but a chance to share how you’re educating at home.

What Happens?

The officer discusses your curriculum, checking it meets Australian Curriculum standards (it does!) and your child’s needs.

  • They inspect resources (e.g, Euka’s online platform, printed workbooks) and your study space.

  • The visit is collaborative, offering tips to enhance your program.

Prepare

Print or have digital access to your yearly plan, term overviews, and learning space.

  • Have some examples of completed worksheets, projects, or assessments.

  • Highlight any ways you've adapted the program to suit your child’s interests or needs (work outside of Euka is great too!).

  • Be ready to show or describe your child’s main learning space. It doesn’t need to be a formal classroom—just a place conducive to learning. You can mention how the space supports different activities (reading, writing, art, etc.)

  • Access to resources like books, stationery, the internet, or educational tools.

Outcome

The officer recommends approval, granting an exemption for home education (12-18 months).

Quick Checklist:

✅ Euka's yearly and term plans (scope and sequences)
✅ Samples of your child’s work
✅ Notes on your daily/weekly routine (if you have one)
✅ Examples of social or extracurricular activities
✅ Space set up for the visit
✅ Be ready for a chat—relaxed and honest

The Best Advice!

Be yourself! There’s no need to over-prepare or stress. The officer’s goal is to see that your child is thriving. If you’ve adjusted or customised the Euka program, feel free to explain why—flexibility is part of what makes home schooling powerful.

You’re the expert on your child’s learning. This visit is just one step in showing how committed and capable you are as their educator.
